A Goal Without a Plan is just a Wish

Today I was checking out my Facebook feed and I came across a sentence in an ad that really stuck with me.  (Inspiration can be found in the darndest places!).

It said, “A goal without a plan is just a wish.”

Whoa!

A wish is something that someone hopes for that is not so easily attainable.  A goal is something that you work towards.

So, let me ask you, are you making wishes for your life, or goals?

Creating a plan for pretty much anything is a smart choice. A plan provides structure for your goals.  It allows you to feel more confident in what you are setting out to do, it keeps you going in the right direction and you can set small goals within the larger goal to celebrate the victories along the way.

If you are setting goals with no plan, the likelihood of failure is much higher.  A plan provides organization, encouragement and results.

A plan can be as simple as an outline handwritten on a piece of paper, or it can be elaborate with graphs and drawings.  Whatever feels right to you.

An important piece of advice that many people with plans forget is, always be ready to pivot.   The well known quote, “It didn’t go according to plan,” is well known for a reason.  Be open to revise your plan when necessary!  Life changes and new information is learned along the way, yet, humans have this amazing ability to adapt.

So, go with the flow, tweak things along the way, and understand that although the plan may change a little from point A to point B, your goal is still within reach.

Don’t get me wrong, wishes are great.  Wishes allow us to dream without limits. But goals allow us to live without limits.
