How to Overcome Fear and Take Action: The “Worst-Case Scenario” Game

Act as If: Becoming Who You Want to Be
I want you to take a moment and write down everything you want in life.

Who do you want to be?
What does it look like?
How do you act when you are this person?

You’ve probably heard the saying: dress for the job you want. The same applies to life. Whatever it is that you want—act as if you already have it.

Why Visualization Isn’t Enough
I’ve read this advice countless times, but without a few key steps, it can fall short.

Yes, say the mantras.

Yes, envision your life as you want it to be.
But here’s the most important part: make a plan. Take real steps toward what you want.

Otherwise, it’s just a pipe dream.

Action is the driving force that makes your dreams reality. When you embody who you want to be, you slowly become that person. Every change, big or small, adds up. It’s not the star you wished on, the Oracle card you pulled, or your next-door neighbor who makes your goals real.

It’s you.

Once you realize the absolute power you hold in your own life, that’s when true growth begins.

Fear: The Roadblock to Progress
Life is scary without confidence. Honestly, even with confidence, life is still scary. But it’s fear that holds us back.

Am I good enough?

What will others think?

How can I ever make that happen?

What if I fail?

So, what if you fail?

Learning Through Failure
My husband and I have a relatively new business. We’re still learning from our mistakes—but in order to learn from mistakes, the mistakes have to happen, right?

If nothing ever went wrong, we’d never know how to improve.

Many times, we make a bigger deal out of something small. Or worse, we overanalyze and assume how others feel about a situation, filling ourselves with anxiety over something that hasn’t even happened.

How silly is that?

The “What’s the Worst That Could Happen?” Game
I like to play this game when my anxiety spikes, and it usually gives me relief.

For example:
As a new business, the steady paycheck disappears. Each job we complete pays for us to live. So, as you can imagine, anxiety runs high at the end of the month, especially when the mortgage comes due.

So, what’s the worst that can happen?

I might pay a bill late.  Maybe I get a late charge. Inconvenient, not life-ending.

If my mortgage is late, there’s a 15-day grace period.

If we still don’t get paid, we could take on a side hustle.

If that’s not enough? We’ve always wanted more land and less house anyway—we could sell and downsize.

See? There are always solutions. Usually, the outcome isn’t nearly as catastrophic as it feels in the moment. Even when the result involves big change, you are more resilient than you think.

Letting Go of Worry
When you let worry in, you give it space in your mind that could be used for something much more productive, encouraging, and positive.

Acknowledge it.
Play the “worst-case scenario” game.
Find a solution.
And then let it go.
Because worry does not serve you.

Final Thought
Today, take one fear that’s been holding you back. Write it down, play the “worst-case scenario” game with it, and then take a single step toward the life you want.

Your future self is waiting.
