After a long time away, I’ve had time to reflect and backslide a bit. After some internal dialogue and evaluation, I’m back! But not in the way that Miss Fortune Blog used to be. This one will be messy and real. Each time I would write a post for Miss Fortune Blog, although I meant it and it was honest, I just didn’t feel completely in it. As time went on, I felt obligated to keep up and to come up with interesting topics and just the right words- that wasn’t the reason I started this blog, and it began to feel like a chore. I believe for this to be successful, the reader and the writer should learn and grow.
Some time ago, I pledged to write a real, raw post every day on my personal social media page. I’d just write about my day, or any problems I was working through and share my process of trying to figure out this thing called life. I found this to be very helpful for not only myself, but for the readers as well, so that is what this will be from now on.
I hope that you will join me in this shift. It’s all about making it work. Oftentimes it’s hard to give up on something you’re building when you see it’s not working. But when you are capable of letting go for something more fulfilling, that is when you can breakthrough and grow.
I’d experienced this when I decided to quit school. When I was younger I was so excited to go to college. I graduated early, went to an expensive private school, dropped out the first semester due to lack of funds and frustration. I began again a bit later at a community college, got my Associates Degree and soon after applied to another private, expensive art school. I went for a few semesters, dropped out. Went back, got pregnant and continued to commute by train and attend full days of school as well as full time work until I was about 6 months. On my very last semester, I dropped out again, it was just too much. A few years later, I had considered going back and finishing, but for what? I did not wish to pursue my degree anymore and my student loans were already atrocious. I was merely doing it because I thought I had to. After long deliberation, I decided, I can do whatever I want. I don’t have to follow anyone’s path but my own. So I took that heavy burden and threw it by the wayside. Now I’m happy, I have a wonderful family business and I don’t have another semesters worth of private art school debt. It felt impossible to make this decision at the time, but let me tell you, it was the right one.
I had the same epiphany with this blog. I love writing, ironically, that’s what I was going to school for, but at a certain point I made this blog more about the pressure of providing content for content sake, rather than writing for myself and others. I began to get anxiety due to the pressure I put on myself to produce something worthwhile. So, for a bit, I Iet it go. Now that I’ve had the time to ponder, I’ve realized I can still help myself and others through my writings without worrying about perfection, or topics or cleverly worded sentences. I found that the place I made the most impact on my mental health and inspiration to others were my daily social media writings.
So here’s to getting back on track! Thank you to everyone who has always supported me and I hope that my Miss Fortune Blog writings can connect with you. Every time a person told me that I had helped them in some way or another through those daily posts it made me so happy because by sharing my day to day struggles and thought processes, I could relate to others on such a personal level and I am so grateful for that.
I can now reflect on this whole experience and witness my growth in deciding what’s best for me. Looking back, I see that I had to take that journey to arrive where I am today.
